USM LECTURER RECEIVES INTERNATIONAL AWARD 1

NIBONG TEBAL, 23 December 2015 – A lecturer at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Engineering Campus, has been presented with a world class award through a high-impact innovative research.

Professor Dr. Abdul Latif Ahmad, who is a lecturer at the School Of Chemical Engineering, has once again heightened the USM name at the international stage with the “World Scientist Awards 2015” by the prestigious Korean innovation body.

Abdul Latif received the award based on one of his innovative researches entitled “Production of L-homophenylalanine as Cardio Drug Precursor via Enzymatic Membrane Bio Reactor”.

 “The innovation is on the production of the basic chemicals L-homophenylalanine as a material for producing drugs to treat cardiac patients and it is manufactured using the latest technology through an enzymatic membrane reactor method”, said the renowned researcher.

 “The achievement and receiving this award is not solely on the intention of research but it is expected to benefit the community at large”, he said.

According to him, the investigation has gained much recognition in the past and won several awards including a research competition at the Higher Learning Institutions Inventions Expo and Conference (PECIPTA) 2009, Malaysia Technology Expo (MTE) 2010 and the Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2010.

He added that the research project has also been successfully patented in Malaysia, Korea and Australia.

It was of a higher note as he received a double success when he was named the recipient of the two categories of World Life Science Grand Award and World Biomedical Science Grand Award.

At the same ceremony, Abdul Latif was also announced as the sole representative from Malaysia selected and appointed by the Korea Invention Academy (KIA) as the Visiting Professor to the Korean Intellectual Property Academy.

He received the award during the Korea Inventor Award Festival 2015 (KIAF) which took place in Seoul, Korea, recently.

KIAF 2015 organized by the Korean Inventions News based in Korea which aims to provide recognition to deserving recipients in various fields and has contributed as well as impacted the socio-economy, including the environment, human beings and economy.

 “I am very grateful for this recognition and it will be a morale booster to pursue excellence in fostering dedication to our beloved university,” he said.

He is determined to continue to be active in the next research that can be commercialized and contribute to the writing of high-impact journals in the interests of society and the nation.

Those who received recognition, including students, known as young or budding scientists, professors, scientists, researchers, doctors and professionals from around the world through the discovery of new technology, invention, innovation and creativity that would bring useful impact to the society and environment.

The awards are presented in recognizing their contributions and achievements in certain areas.
