NATION DEMANDS FOR MORE ENGINEERS BY 2020
PENANG, 9th April 2016 – The significance of engineering in solving the nation’s issues greatly influences the prosperity, lifestyle qualities, competitiveness and sustainability for our country’s future.
According to Assistant Pro-Chancellor, Engineering Campus, University Sains Malaysia (USM), Professor Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah, the engineering field is one of the most crucial subjects in daily life.
”Everything around us is closely linked to engineering”, said Ahmad Farhan to the school representatives which included counselors and parents in his speech at the 2016 USM Open Day here today.
“Technology is an alternative in supporting our lives not only from the existing but to the cheaper and better, but also resolving surrounding issues”, he further explained.
He added, the role of engineering field also aids mankind to prepare for disasters and the future capacity of our country greatly depends on the engineering field.
”We need our own engineers from our own people to develop and increase high standards of living approaching 2020”, he said.
Ahmad Farhan who is also the Dean, School of Civil Engineering hopes that the school counselors as well as parents who were present would help the students in explaining more clearly and indepth of the study opportunities offerred in USM particularly in the engineering field.
At the moment, there are six Engineering Schools at the Engineering Campus, USM and 11 bachelor degree programmes recognized by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Public Service Department (JPA) and Washington Accord.
Also offerred here in USM are postgraduate programmes in course work and mix modes namely Chemical Engineering, Electronic System Design Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Minerals Resources Engineeering, Microelectronic Engineering and Structural Engineering.
Besides that, with the availability of academic experts and reliable laboratories, this campus is the students’ choice in furthering their studies at the Masters and Doctorate level in research mode in various fields part time and fulltime.
Prior to that, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Dr. Omar Osman who officiated the open day also hopes that the programme would be continued annually in order to provide information and attract the community around Penang as well as the entire country to approach USM.
The two day programme which commenced today showcased a variety of activities among other the opportunity to meet the representatives from the schools at the exhibition area and the offer of waived fees for candidates who apply within the two days.
Other than that, health screening and blood donation drive was also available for visitors. Also took place were the solar powered vehicles exhibition, stalls managed by students and Dental Mobile Bus service provided by the Advanced Medical & Dental Institute (IPPT), USM.
Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chanceloors, Assistant Vice-Chancellors, Registrar and the Deans of the Schools, USM.
