MALAY MEDICINE IS COMPLEMENTARY TO MODERN MEDICINE
NIBONG TEBAL, 3 August 2016 – The Malay medicine might not be known worldwide but it is complimentary to one of the branches of the medical field in Malaysia.
According to the Manager, The Integrative Medicine Clinic, Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (IPPT), University Sains Malaysia (USM), Bertam, Dr. Wan Adnan Wan Omar said the Malay medicine is one of the branches to treat some patients.
“For us, we are hoping to elevate the Malay medicine with a different approach by using the SOP as an example and implemented only in the clinic”, he said when met at the My Body Fit and Fabulous Programme (MYBFF) organized by the Health Unit, Engineering Campus here today.
Dr. Wan Adnan added his department would focus on Malay medicine including producing herbs in clinical research.
“IPPT would focus on research and would be a product that would benefit the community”, he said.
Besides that, the clinic would also focus on treatments for chronic diseases such as frozen shoulder, back pain, arthritis and stroke.
The clinic will operate during office hours and would also offer cupping services and post natal massages with a minimum charge.
Responding to the community’s views on Malay medicine, Wan Adnan explained that we are a little behind compared to the Chinese and Indian medicines which are known and recognized by the world.
“The Malay Medicine can actually be upgraded to be one of the medical fields at the hospital as well as creating a special position for the field”, he explained.
He also stressed and encouraged the researchers and practitioners of Malay medicine to document all the knowledge related to it.
Meanwhile, Medical Officer, Health Unit, Engineering Campus, Dr. Menal A. Hamdi said, her department is always concerned with the well being of the campus populace.
“The objective of such programme is to create awareness for the campus populace to take better care of their health”, she said at the opening ceremony.
According to Dr. Menal A.Hamdi, MYBFF programme is an intervention of a healthy lifestyle to overcome obesity among the campus community and in turn lead a healthier life and improve work performance.
The programme initiated with the Malay community exercise called “Old Exercise” led by the Assistant Medical Officer, Mohd Wazir Abu Bakar received a positive response from the participants.
Also held were the healthy diet lecture given by the Dietician Officer, Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (IPPT), Yusfizahani Md Yusuff and a healthy food demonstration by the Health Unit themselves.
