USM ENGINEERING CAMPUS COLLECTS OVER 2 TONNES OF RECYCLABLES IN CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY DRIVE

NIBONG TEBAL, 24 June – A total of 2.03 tonnes of recyclable items were successfully collected during the Recycling Collection Programme held at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Engineering Campus, highlighting the campus community’s increasing commitment to sustainability.

The programme organised by the Engineering Campus Sustainability Committee chaired by Ir. Gs. Ts. Dr. Chang Chun Kiat, took place on 24 June 2025 at the Wet Lab, Science and Engineering Research Centre (SERC), USM Engineering Campus.

As one of the initiatives, a webinar titled “Jom Kitar Semula” was conducted on 17 June 2025 by Muhammad Hanifah Redzuan from the Corporate Communication Department of E-Idaman Sdn. Bhd., where he introduced the IdamanXchange app.

The app allows users to convert recyclable materials into digital reward points, aligning with the nation’s cashless initiative.

A total of 12 categories of recyclables were collected from various Responsibility Centres (PTJ) and individuals, including mixed paper, black-and-white paper, used cooking oil, cardboard, plastics, glass, and metal.

The programme generated a total exchange value of RM670.90, with the top contributors being black-and-white paper (RM233.12), used cooking oil (RM202.44), and mixed paper (RM86.29).

In terms of weight, mixed paper recorded the highest volume at 862.55 kg, followed by black-and-white paper (666.05 kg) and cardboard (233.1 kg), indicating that paper-based waste remains the dominant recyclable material on campus.
