TAIPING, 1 November 2025 - A total of 32 volunteers, comprising 27 students and five staff members from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), took part in the Perak 2025 Post-Flood Relief Mission, organised by the Residents’ Council of Desasiswa Jaya Lembaran Utama (MPDJLU), USM Engineering Campus.

Recognising the hardships faced by the local community, MPDJLU swiftly launched this corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to assist flood-affected residents, as Perak was among the states most severely impacted by flash floods since early October 2025.

This mission marked the fifth post-flood relief effort organised by the Desasiswa Jaya Lembaran Utama volunteer team, following the success of previous missions in Johor.

The relief efforts focused on the early recovery phase, which included cleaning affected homes and public facilities, as well as distributing aid boxes to communities around Mukim Trong and Mukim Matang.

The mission was led by Zairul Haikal Abdullah, a final-year Chemical Engineering student, who served as the Programme Director, under the guidance of Hasliza Mat Saad, Principal of Desasiswa Jaya Lembaran Utama and Programme Advisor.

According to Zairul Haikal, the main objective of the mission was not only to ease the burden of flood victims but also to instil a spirit of volunteerism among Engineering Campus students.

“Hands-on field experience provides students with meaningful exposure to the realities of disaster management and reinforces their role as responsible and compassionate members of the university community,” he said.

He added that participation in such initiatives plays a vital role in developing student leadership through real-world engagement in disaster-affected areas.

“It helps shape future leaders who are knowledgeable, empathetic, and responsive to current social challenges,” he added.

The two-day programme, held from 1 to 2 November 2025, was carried out in collaboration with several partners, including MAPIM Malaysia, Masjid Muhammad Al-Fateh, NGO SALIMAH, the Mukim Trong and Mukim Matang Penghulu Offices, as well as local village committees.

Meanwhile, Hasliza Mat Saad expressed her appreciation to all parties who supported the mission.

“Our deepest gratitude goes to Professor Ir. Dr. Mariatti Jaafar, Director of the Engineering Campus, as well as department heads and campus management for their continuous moral and logistical support,” she said.

She added that the active involvement of JLU volunteers in this mission reflects the ‘USM Prihatin’ (USM Cares) spirit, which not only strengthens community engagement but also promotes the values of humanity, empathy, and social responsibility among campus members.
