SPECIAL CRIME PREVENTION TALK RAISES USM STUDENTS’ SAFETY AWARENESS

NIBONG TEBAL, 6 October 2026 - The Office of the Director and the Centre for Co-Curricular Planning, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus (KKTSS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), organised a Special Crime Prevention Talk for USM students here today.
The programme, attended by approximately 800 first-year students, aimed to raise awareness of personal safety and the preventive measures they can take to reduce the risk of becoming victims of crime.
The talk, which focused on social safety awareness, online safety and cybercrime, was delivered by Investigating Officer from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division, Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters (IPD SPS), Inspector Mani Raj Muniandy.
The students were briefed on potential risks when using the internet and social media, including online scams and cybercrime, as well as the importance of exercising caution when sharing information and interacting on digital platforms.

A briefing on the Volunteer Smartphone Patrol (VSP) was also delivered by Inspector Muhammad Helmi Zainudin, Head of the OP/KSS Branch, Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division (BPJKKD), IPD SPS.
The briefing introduced students to VSP and its role in enabling members of the public to channel information on safety concerns and criminal incidents to the police.
Such exposure is particularly relevant for first-year students who are beginning their campus life, helping them become more aware of their personal safety and surroundings while exercising greater caution when using online platforms.
The programme is expected to enhance students’ knowledge and awareness of crime prevention and encourage them to take appropriate measures to safeguard themselves throughout their time on campus.
