School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

Universiti Sains Malaysia
Introduction

The School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (SEEE), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), was established in 1986 to meet the growing demand for competent engineers in the nation’s rapidly developing electrical and electronics industries. As part of Malaysia’s only Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX) university, SEEE operates from the USM Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal, Penang, and is recognized nationally and internationally for its academic and research excellence.

SEEE offers a comprehensive range of academic programs at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At the undergraduate level, students can pursue a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Electronic Engineering, or Bachelor of Mechatronic Engineering, all of which are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) under Board Engineer Malaysia (BEM). At the postgraduate level, the school offers Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

The school places a strong emphasis on research and innovation. It has developed key expertise in areas such as microelectronics, computer systems, telecommunications, control and automation, and mechatronic systems. These focus areas are supported by state-of-the-art laboratories, including the NI-USM Embedded Systems Laboratory, Electrical Power Laboratory, Microprocessor and PCB Laboratories, and the Communication and Mechatronics Laboratories. These facilities serve not only academic and research needs but also support collaborative work with industries.

SEEE actively engages with the electrical and electronics industry through various initiatives and partnerships. The school offers consultancy services, specialized training programs, and short courses tailored to industry needs. Strong ties with the Industrial and Community Advisory Panel (ICAP), along with feedback from employers and alumni, continuously shape and refine the curriculum. These engagements ensure that graduates are well-equipped with both technical skills and professional competencies, making them highly sought after in the job market.

As a forward-thinking institution, SEEE is committed to continuously enhancing its academic programs and research endeavours to meet global standards, while also addressing national development goals. With a solid foundation in engineering education and a clear focus on the future, the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering at USM is poised to remain a leading force in shaping the engineers of tomorrow.
