The Health Unit of USM Engineering Campus was established in 1990 at the Engineering Campus in Tronoh, Perak, with the primary aim of providing medical services to engineering students. In 2001, the unit officially relocated to its new location at the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal, Penang.
Currently, the Health Unit is operated by a dedicated healthcare team comprising:
- 3 Medical Officers
- 1 Dental Officer
- 2 Medical Assistant
- 5 Staff Nurses
- 2 Pharmacists Assistant
- 1 Medical Laboratory Technologist
- 2 Dental Surgery Assistants
- 1 Health Care Assistant
- 1 Driver
The Health Unit focuses comprehensively on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and health resource management. Services offered include outpatient care for minor illnesses, emergency treatment, and referrals for more serious cases to nearby health facilities such as Parit Buntar Hospital, Sungai Bakap District Hospital, Bukit Mertajam Hospital, Seberang Jaya Hospital, and the USM Advanced Medical and Dental Institute (IPPT).
In addition to providing medical and dental services, the Health Unit also plays a vital role in maintaining public health within the campus. This includes controlling the spread of infectious diseases and monitoring canteen hygiene to ensure food safety and the well-being of the entire campus community.
Since its establishment, the Health Unit has been led by several Heads of Unit:

- Dr. Mohan (Tronoh Campus, 1998–1999)
- Dr. Naeem Khan (Tronoh & Nibong Tebal Campus, 1999–2004)
- Dr. Menal A. Hamdi (Nibong Tebal Campus, 2005–2019)
- Dr. Farhi Abidin (Nibong Tebal Campus, 2019–present)
