Introduction

The School of Materials and Mineral Resources Engineering (SMMRE) at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) stands as a premier academic institution offering distinguished programmes in Materials Engineering, Mineral Resources Engineering, and Polymer Engineering. Since its establishment in 1986, SMMRE has become a leader in engineering education and innovation. Situated at the USM Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal, Penang, SMMRE provides academic programmes that are accredited for six years by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM)—an affirmation of its exceptional academic quality and relevance. The undergraduate curriculum, leading to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree, integrates theoretical foundations with hands-on industrial training, preparing graduates to meet the evolving demands of both local and international engineering sectors.
At the postgraduate level, SMMRE offers advanced academic and research opportunities tailored to professionals and scholars seeking specialised knowledge and innovative contributions. The Master of Science in Materials Engineering (Mixed Mode) is offered on both full-time and part-time bases, featuring a flexible blended learning approach suited to working professionals.

For those pursuing academic or industrial research, SMMRE also offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) by research in a wide range of focus areas, including ceramics, nanomaterials, biomaterials, semiconductor materials, mineral processing, pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, rubber and latex technology, polymer composites, and smart polymers. These programmes are designed to foster critical thinking, research excellence, and meaningful contributions to global scientific and engineering advancement.

SMMRE fosters a vibrant research environment supported by expert mentorship and advanced laboratories. The MS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 - accredited Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL) offers mechanical testing services, serving both academia and industry—highlighting SMMRE’s commitment to research excellence and practical innovation.
