River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC)

Universiti Sains Malaysia
Introduction

The River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC), established in 2001, is a leading research centre at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) focused on River Management, Urban Drainage Management, Hydroinformatics, and Environmental Hydraulic Management. In October 2014, REDAC was accorded the status of Higher Education Centre of Excellence (HICoE) by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) for its niche in Sustainable Urban Stormwater Management.

REDAC pioneers sustainable urban water solutions through innovations like the Bio-Ecological Drainage System (BIOECODS), developed in smart partnership with the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) Malaysia and guided by the Urban Stormwater Management Manual for Malaysia (MSMA).

In 2025, the BIOECODS system was internationally recognised as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site. Strengthening its global leadership further, REDAC has held the UNESCO Chair in Ecohydraulics for Sustainable Water Infrastructures for SDG 6 in the Asia and the Pacific Region since October 2020.

REDAC actively collaborates with government agencies and industry partners, both locally and internationally, enhancing its research impact and outreach. It offers specialised postgraduate programmes—MSc and PhD—in its four core areas, designed to address real-world challenges and meet industry needs.

With strong interdisciplinary expertise, industry linkages, and a commitment to sustainability, REDAC continues to lead in applied research, integrating science, policy, and practice to advance resilient water and environmental infrastructure.
