BRISK WALK & PLOGGING AT BIOECODS: HEALTH, CLEANLINESS AND A GREEN CAMPUS
NIBONG TEBAL, 25 August 2025 – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through its River Engineering and Urban Drainage Research Centre (REDAC), organised a Brisk Walk and Plogging activity at the Bio-Ecological Drainage System (BIOECODS) area at the USM Engineering Campus today.
The programme aims to promote a healthy lifestyle among the campus community while raising awareness of environmental care through the practice of collecting litter while walking, in line with USM’s aspiration to strengthen its role as a green campus, particularly within the BIOECODS area.
Programme Director, Syafiq Shaharudin, said the activity was designed to provide dual benefits for participants by combining elements of physical health and environmental sustainability.
“Activities such as brisk walking and plogging are not only good for health, but they also contribute to ensuring BIOECODS remains clean and sustainable,” he said.
According to Syafiq, the BIOECODS at USM is the first bio-ecological drainage system of its kind in Malaysia, integrating river engineering functions with ecological principles.
“It has also been recognised as a UNESCO Ecohydrology Demonstration Site due to its effectiveness in managing stormwater, improving water quality and enriching the campus landscape,” he added.
He further emphasised that the programme highlighted the role of BIOECODS as a centre for learning and the practice of Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), which not only addresses flash flood issues but also raises community awareness of the importance of sustainability.
“In addition to promoting an active lifestyle and a healthy mind, this activity contributes directly to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas of health and well-being, sustainable communities and biodiversity conservation,” he said.
“With the participation of students, staff and the local community, this programme reinforces USM’s commitment to being a leader in sustainability practices, positioning the campus not only as a centre of academic excellence but also as a green campus icon in the region,” Syafiq added.
Following the brisk walk session, participants were also treated to a Healthy Breakfast Campaign held at the REDAC, highlighting the importance of choosing a nutritious breakfast to promote a fitter body, a cheerful mind, and a more productive day.
