SERC-MBSP SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME STRENGTHENS RECYCLING PRACTICES THROUGH DIY HOME DECOR WORKSHOP

NIBONG TEBAL, 28 April 2026 - A sustainability programme jointly organised by the Science and Engineering Research Centre (SERC), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), and the Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) through its Upcycle Unit was successfully held today with the participation of 23 participants.

One of the key highlights of the programme was the Handicraft Workshop: DIY Sustainable Home Décor, which focused on the creative reuse of kitchen waste materials to produce innovative and value‑added interior decor items.

In her address, SERC Coordinator Hariy Pauzi emphasised that the programme was organised to raise awareness on the importance of recycling practices in preserving environmental sustainability.

According to her, initiatives such as this provide participants with practical exposure to transforming selected waste materials into useful products, while at the same time encouraging a more creative and responsible approach to managing available resources.

“In today’s increasingly challenging world, sustainability is no longer a choice, but a necessity,” she said.

She added that such approaches have the potential to act as catalysts for more sustainable lifestyle changes and could generate positive impact within the wider community.

She also expressed hope that the programme would inspire participants to adopt recycling practices in their daily lives, whether at home or in the workplace.
