USM THROUGH ZAWAIN STRENGTHENS WELFARE SUPPORT FOR EXCELLENT ASNAF STUDENTS THROUGH LAPTOP CONTRIBUTION

NIBONG TEBAL, 7 May 2026 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), through the USM Zakat, Waqf and Infaq Office (ZAWAIN), today organised a Laptop Handover Ceremony for five Excellent Asnaf Students of the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus.
The laptop contribution forms part of the university’s efforts to assist students from low-income families in continuing their studies in a more conducive and effective learning environment.
In her speech, the Director of the USM Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus, Professor Ir. Dr. Mariatti Jaafar @ Mustapha, said that the contribution was more than merely the handover of a device, but also reflected the commitment and confidence of external parties in the potential of USM students.
She also expressed appreciation to the donor for the contribution, which she described as having a significant impact in supporting students’ learning needs and ensuring the continuity of their studies across all three USM campuses.

Professor Ir. Dr. Mariatti also reminded the recipients that the contribution comes with responsibility and should be utilised optimally to support learning, strengthen knowledge acquisition, and enhance the students’ professional capabilities.
“This contribution reflects the confidence of external parties in the capabilities of our students and demonstrates the effectiveness of the university’s approach in implementing student welfare initiatives, particularly through ZAWAIN USM,” she said.
Meanwhile, Director of ZAWAIN USM, Associate Professor Dr. Anwar Allah Pitchay, explained that the initiative was inspired by the donor’s intention to contribute 100 laptop units to the excellent asnaf students of USM.
According to him, for the implementation of the initiative, a total of 100 excellent students, including five first-year students from the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus from low-income families, were selected based on criteria set by the donor.

“The initiative will be expanded further to benefit more students in need in the future, depending on the amount of sponsorship received by ZAWAIN,” he said.
Dr. Anwar also expressed his deepest appreciation to Haji Hassan Hussain for the contribution and called on more philanthropists to come forward in supporting and strengthening USM student welfare initiatives in the future.
One of the recipients, Umie Aida Ismail, 22, a student from the School of Civil Engineering, expressed her happiness and gratitude for receiving the laptop and stated that she would continue striving for excellence throughout her studies at USM.
Another recipient, Muhammad Riyaz Muhammed Mubarak, 20, from the School of Mechanical Engineering, said that the contribution would support the recipients’ learning journey and motivate them to continue achieving good academic results in the future.
Other recipients included Nurul Ain Humaira Huzaidi from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Nur Khatijah Anuar Deen from the School of Chemical Engineering, and Siti Nurhidayah Zulkifle from the School of Civil Engineering.
