USM ENHANCES LEARNING EXPERIENCE WITH UPGRADED 1,140 DORMITORY FURNITURE SETS AT KKTSS
NIBONG TEBAL, 6 May 2026 - Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently continued to strengthen its commitment towards enhancing student welfare and quality of life by upgrading 1,140 new furniture sets at the residential halls of Desasiswa Jaya, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus (KKTSS).
The initiative includes the provision of new beds, wardrobes, study tables and chairs with more modern and ergonomic designs, in line with the university’s efforts to create a conducive, comfortable, and progressive learning environment.
According to a statement by the residential management, the initial phase of the implementation involves offering the upgraded rooms to new students for the 2026/2027 academic session beginning this September.
The new furniture has been placed in three blocks of Desasiswa Jaya, covering triple, twin-sharing and single-room configurations to meet the flexibility and comfort needs of residents.
In addition, the distribution of the facilities will also be extended to existing students in stages during the next phase of implementation.
Campus Director, Professor Ir. Dr. Mariatti Jaafar @ Mustapha said the initiative forms part of the university’s continuous strategy to strengthen a high-quality and competitive learning ecosystem.
According to her, the facility upgrades also consider the increasing presence of international students, which requires the provision of globally competitive facilities.
“Furthermore, this initiative clearly demonstrates USM’s commitment through the Housing and Accommodation Centre (HAC) in ensuring that every facility provided is maintained at the highest standard,” said Professor Ir. Dr. Mariatti.
“It is aimed at supporting a conducive and holistic learning experience for the entire campus community,” she added.
Meanwhile, President of the Student Representative Council (MPP), Muhammad Nuraiman Mohd Yusrino, welcomed the initiative, saying that it provides a direct positive impact on students’ well-being and motivation.
“The modern and practical furniture design not only creates a more comfortable living environment, but also helps optimise space utilisation and supports students’ daily activities,” he said.
