KKTSS DIRECTOR OUTLINES FIVE PILLARS OF SUCCESS FOR 854 NEW USM ENGINEERING STUDENTS

NIBONG TEBAL, 20 September 2026 - A total of 854 new students of the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus (KKTSS), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), for the 2026/2027 Academic Session attended a session with the Campus Director as part of the Siswa Lestari Programme here today.

During the session, Campus Director Professor Ir. Dr. Mariatti Jaafar @ Mustapha shared key advice and guidance with the new students through five key pillars to help them adapt to university life and pursue excellence throughout their studies.

On academic matters, Mariatti reminded the students that university life requires a high level of self-motivation, as class attendance is not monitored as closely as it is at school or matriculation institutions.

Drawing on her 24 years of experience as an academic, she also emphasised the importance of building a strong academic foundation from the first semester to help students maintain consistent performance throughout their studies.

As technology continues to evolve, students were also encouraged to make use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a learning support tool, including applications such as NotebookLM recommended by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE).

However, she stressed that AI should be used responsibly, with students verifying information against textbooks, academic materials and other reliable sources.

Beyond academic excellence, students were encouraged to actively participate in student associations, residential college activities and school-level programmes to develop soft skills such as communication, presentation and teamwork.

Taking up leadership roles in student organisations can also add value to their resumes while helping them accumulate merit points for on-campus accommodation.

“USM aims to produce HEBAT graduates (Holistic, Entrepreneurial, Balanced, Articulate and Thinking) who uphold strong moral values and integrity and are committed to serving the nation, particularly in meeting the future demand for engineering professionals,” she said.

In developing students who excel not only academically but also as individuals, they were reminded to practise mutual respect towards their peers, staff, senior students and lecturers.

At the same time, students were encouraged to make full use of the Academic Advisor system to seek guidance on their study plans and academic development throughout their time at USM.

Touching on integrity, Mariatti stressed that compliance with university regulations and honesty during examinations are non-negotiable.

Any academic misconduct, including attempts to cheat or misuse technology during examinations, may result in serious disciplinary action.

She also reminded students not to face academic challenges alone, but to seek support from the university if they encounter financial difficulties or emotional stress.

At the same time, students were encouraged to appreciate the sacrifices made by their parents and families by giving their best throughout their studies and striving to complete their degree within four years.
