NIBONG TEBAL, 14 October 2026 - A total of 487 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students from Years One to Four attended a Crime Prevention and Campus Safety Briefing at the Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus (KKTSS), USM, on 12 October.

The programme was organised by the Office of the Director in collaboration with the KKTSS Co-Curricular Programme Centre and involved students from 25 co-curricular courses.

This was the second session of its kind, following the first session held on 6 October 2026, which involved 800 first-year students.

The briefing was delivered by Inspector Muhammad Helmi Zainudin, Head of the OP/KSS Branch, Crime Prevention and Community Safety Division, Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters.

He shared information on current crime trends and modus operandi, particularly those that could affect young people. The key issues highlighted included online scams, phishing, online buying and selling scams, fake job offers, fraudulent investment schemes and cyberbullying.

Students were also briefed on personal safety measures to practise on campus, including remaining aware of their surroundings, ensuring that residential rooms and vehicles were locked, and avoiding travelling alone in secluded areas.

In addition, they were reminded to safeguard their personal belongings and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of becoming victims of crime.

The briefing also covered property crimes, drug abuse, physical altercations and sexual harassment, as well as the appropriate actions to take when confronted with such situations.

To help students respond promptly during emergencies, information was also provided on available assistance and reporting channels, including the 999 Emergency Hotline, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997, and the Campus Security Unit.

The programme aimed to raise students’ awareness of crime risks and equip them with basic knowledge to protect themselves and those around them. The initiative is also expected to encourage students to play an active role in maintaining campus safety.

Through collaboration between the university and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the programme underscored the importance of vigilance and preventive action among the campus community in fostering a safe and conducive learning environment.
