PPBLT KKTSS USM AND KERIAN DISTRICT EDUCATION OFFICE STRENGTHEN STRATEGIC COLLABORATION TO ENHANCE SPM 2026 CANDIDATES’ SPEAKING SKILLS

NIBONG TEBAL, 14 October 2026 - The School of Languages, Literacies and Translation (PPBLT), Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Engineering Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), strengthened its strategic collaboration with the Kerian District Education Office through the 2026 SPM Malay Language Excellence Workshop, which focused on improving students’ speaking skills.

The community engagement and academic knowledge transfer programme brought together 63 students and 21 accompanying teachers from secondary schools across the Kerian district.

The initiative was organised to provide practical and targeted guidance to improve students’ oral proficiency, particularly in idea delivery, communication fluency, presentation skills and self-confidence.

As part of the workshop, Language Teacher Aida Shuhaida Mustafa delivered a briefing entitled “Kemahiran Bertutur Murid Cemerlang Berpandukan Modul KIS” (Speaking Skills for High-Achieving Students Based on the KIS Module).

The session equipped students with comprehensive approaches and strategies to deliver structured and impactful oral presentations.

To reinforce understanding and encourage active participation, the interactive module “Sepakat, Fikir dan Kongsi” (Agree, Think and Share) was conducted by two language teachers, Shamin Sharif and Mohammad Aliff Naim Mat Rani.

The activity guided students in generating ideas individually, discussing and exchanging views with their peers, and reaching a consensus before presenting their ideas orally.

This active learning approach allowed participants to apply the communication techniques they had learned in a conducive learning environment while building the confidence to present arguments clearly, fluently and thoughtfully.

The collaboration reflects USM’s continued commitment to supporting school-level educational development while ensuring that candidates are well prepared for the 2026 SPM Malay Language Speaking Test, with the aim of improving Malay Language grades across the district.
