ASTRAL SHINES: MALAYSIAN TEAM SECURES SPOT IN TEKNOFEST 2024 MODEL SATELLITE FINALS

PENANG, 27 September 2024 – A team known as the Astral, recently has achieved a significant historical milestone by becoming the first Malaysian team to reach the finals of the esteemed Model Satellite Competition held at Teknofest in Turkiye.

In a field of 165 global teams, Astral achieved a position within the top 15 at Teknofest, one of the world's largest technology and aerospace events, marking a significant achievement for Malaysia in aerospace engineering while showcasing cutting-edge innovations and exceptional engineering talent.

The competition required participants to design, construct, and launch model satellites emulating real-world satellite functions, and Astral's design incorporated an advanced filtering module capable of capturing images in various colours, closely replicating the bandwidth filtering used in actual satellite systems.

Furthermore, their model incorporated an autonomous payload deployment mechanism, enabling the collection of essential data, including location, gyroscopic orientation, acceleration, temperature, pressure, altitude, and humidity.

Over the course of eight months, Astral successfully completed nine rigorous stages, designing and constructing a rocket to launch their satellite, with their perseverance, passion, and dedication ultimately securing them a position among the competition's elite.

The team expressed their sincerest gratitude to their sponsors and supporters, without whom this success would not have been possible.

These include the School of Aerospace Engineering USM, Students’ Affairs Development and Alumni Division (BHEPA) of USM, Yayasan Perkasa (the Ministry of Higher Education), Aerospace Business Unit, Kelab Peminat Radio Amatur dan Rekreasi (REAKSI), and the generous crowd funders, all of whom contributed to making this journey possible.
